Books: Leaving The Easy City
by RJ Hansford
Leaving the Easy City is a collection of 35 poems (published posthumously) on the theme of wilderness, from hot deserts to the permafrost of Siberia.
The poems in this collection deal with the theme of wilderness; the adaptations that peoples and animals are forced to make in order to cope with extreme climatic conditions in various parts of the world. Regions covered range from deserts (Sahara, Namib, Gobi) through Syria, Afghanistan, Pakistan, to the steppes of central Asia, Northern China and Siberia. Almost one third of the poems deal with the animal world e.g. beetle, mantis, oryx; the remainder explore the necessarily sparse way of life of the human inhabitants, how they are affected both practically and spiritually. The poems are varied in form, rhyme and repetitive pattern interspersed with free verse.
