I hail from an old Mere family and have lived in the town most of my life. I attended Mere Infant and Junior schools and then Shaftesbury High School for Girls. I trained as a teacher and taught in local schools but have also been employed in other jobs including office work.
My husband, Bernard, and I played in local brass bands and then founded and ran Mere Manor Brass & Youth Band for many years. I also conducted Wincanton Town Band for several years and Bernard played on their cornet bench.
In 1996 I became a trustee of a newly formed charity – The Mere & District Linkscheme - which was to provide volunteer transport and care to ten parishes of this rural community. Charged with finding fund-raising ideas, I founded the Mere Literary Festival and writing competition the following year in the hope it would become the charity’s major fund raiser.
I enjoy writing competitions myself and have won a number of short story prizes including the Winchester Writers’ Conference, Wells and Lichfield competitions.
I founded and lead PennyBank Writers – the Mere & District Writing Group – which meets once a month in Mere.
My one act plays have also been successful in both the Somerset County and Woolstore Theatre One Act Play Festivals. I am a member of Mere Amateur Dramatic Society (MADS) who have also performed my longer plays, The Weatherman’s Harvest and Sing Nowell.
